Mayurbhanj occupies a unique position being endowed with lush green vegetation, different fauna and rich cultural heritage. The district has a rich mineral base and is home to the Similipal Biosphere. This was a princely state until its merger with the state of Odisha on 1st January,1949. The district is situated between 85 degree 40 minutes to 87 degree 11 minutes East Longitude and 21degree 16 minutes to 22 degree 34 minutes North Latitude. The geographical spread of the district is 10418 Sq. Kms. As per provisional census 2011, the total population of the district is 25,13,895 and the density is 241. The sex ratio is 1005 females per thousand males. The district is having 4 Sub-divisions, 9 blocks, 382 Gram Panchayat and 1 Municipality.
